Copyright & The Internet

  • The Copyright Act was amended in 1999 to provide that copyright materials sent over the Internet or stored on web servers are treated in the same manner as copyright material in other media.

  • The amendments also provide clarity on copyright protection and infringement. For instance, incidental copying as a result of browsing websites is clearly not an infringement of copyright. On the other hand, downloading copyright materials without permission is infringement.

See: • Specific Copyright Issues – Copyright and the Internet
    • Copyright Act (Cap. 63)

Domain Names

  • Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC) manages and administers the registration of Singapore domain names ending with “.sg”.

  • Businesses who wish to be accredited as SGNIC domain name registrars (e.g. to sell “.sg” domain names) should approach SGNIC directly.

  • Businesses who want to register for “.sg” domain names should approach SGNIC accredited registrars or their resellers.

Electronic Transactions & Contracts

  • The Electronic Transactions Act (Cap. 88) clearly defines the rights and obligations of the transacting parties. It also addresses the legal aspects (e.g. validity) of electronic contracts, use of digital signatures and concerns for authentication and non-repudiation.

  • Any party, including businesses, entering into contracts online should be familiar with this law.

See: Electronic Transactions Act (Cap. 88)
