Axis Plus used the LETAS grant to get certified and accredited, leading to smooth expansion into the region.
Kenneth Ng, 45, knew Axis Plus, the telecommunications services company he’d started in 2004, could go far. Backed by funding from private investors, the company managed to secure top customers like Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.
With over 20 years experience in the industry, Kenneth knew he could take the company further and farther. ‘I wanted to expand to other South-east Asian countries. First Indonesia, then to the emerging markets Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar,” said Kenneth.
A SPRING visit
In mid-2005, he approached SPRING Singapore for advice. SPRING pointed out that ISO 9001 accreditation would help him greatly in establishing credibility and credentials to enter foreign markets.
It was then that SPRING Singapore suggested Kenneth apply for the LETAS grant to subsidise the cost of hiring a consultant to help Axis Plus achieve ISO 9001 accreditation.
Niche Market A Plus
To prepare for the LETAS application, Kenneth put together all the necessary paperwork.
"We had to tell them why we wanted accreditation and they had to be sure the business was of a quality standard. So they asked for our company profile, audited financial reports and business plans for the future,” said Kenneth.
In his application he explained that Axis Plus had a niche market in repairing mobile phones. The factors in his favour: few competitors, low business risks and growing market.
“SPRING was very supportive towards our development plans because they saw the potential in my business,” said Kenneth.
Kenneth submitted his LETAS application in February 2006 and it was approved just a month later.
Faster Growth With Certification
Axis Plus engaged the consultants in March 2006 and was ISO 9001 certified on 2 June 2006.
The consultants raised Axis Plus’ organisational processes to industry standards, conducted thorough trial audits and provided detailed assessment reports to prepare them for ISO certification.
"Since we got ISO 9001 we’ve seen an increase in customer requests for new initiatives in Singapore as well as to expand to other regions," said Kenneth.
The certification gives Axis Plus’ customers the assurance that the company provides quality services.
"We would have gone for ISO accreditation even without the LETAS grant, but it would not have been as fast without the support. It might have taken another year or so," said Kenneth.
Axis Plus aims to be in Medan and Jakarta by the end of 2006, and Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar by 2007.
