Obtaining Utilities

  • If your business premise does not come with utilities, you will need to activate your own electricity, gas, water and telecommunications
  • If you are renting from the JTC Corporation (JTC), the application forms for utilities will be attached to your rental application.

  • For the Housing Development Board (HDB), you will have to apply on your own.

Meeting Your Utility Needs

  • When renting or purchasing a piece of property, it is prudent to check if the power/electrical load for your premises is suited for your type of trade.

  • This will help you to avoid being caught in the dilemma where your machinery or equipment cannot be used on your premises.
  • If you need extra power, you should speak with the landlord and utilities supplier (Singapore Power). They may be able to upgrade your electrical load or channel some spare power to you.

Insurance

  • Depending on your type of business, you may wish to purchase insurance against incidents that may be very damaging to your business. For instance, hawker stalls and food stalls are prone to fires and theft.
  • Some landlords may also require you to purchase fire, public liability and workman's compensation insurance.

  • You can approach any bank or insurance company to obtain insurance for your business.
