Passes For Foreign Students

All foreigners who work in Singapore must hold a valid work pass. There are two groups of students that you can hire:

Foreign Students Studying In Singapore
Foreign Students Studying Overseas

Foreign Students Studying In Singapore

  • Foreign students who are studying in Singapore are not allowed to hold jobs here. They may be on industrial attachment (internship) at your business as part of their school curriculum.

  • However, industrial attachments are not jobs but a form of training. Therefore, the two should not be confused.

Exceptions

  • The only exception to the rule applies to full-time foreign students of approved educational institutions. These students must be:

    • Student Pass holders; and
    • studying at educational institutions approved by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

  • Foreign students from approved institutions are allowed to work without the need for a work permit:

    • full-time during the school vacations
    • part-time during the school term (maximum of 16 hours per week)

Foreign Students Studying Overseas

  • You can also hire foreign students studying at overseas educational institutions. Many foreign students are keen to do their industrial attachment in Singapore.

  • There are 2 types of passes you can apply for:

    • Training Employment Pass (TEP) - For foreign students who meet the necessary tertiary or professional qualifications and whose monthly basic salary is more than S$2,500 a month.

    • Work Permit for Foreign Trainee - For foreign students who do not meet the TVP criteria. Under this work permit, the training period should be six months or less.
